What are the Dangers of Mold?

There are many different types of mold that may be present in your home.  Some molds are fairly harmless, while some can cause major health problems.  Mold reproduces by means of spores and can begin growing when mold spores land on moist surfaces in homes.  Mold spores in large amounts can be hazardous to human health, causing allergic reactions and respiratory problems. Most molds are for the most part harmless, however some molds produce mycotoxins that can harm animals and humans.  Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) is typically the most harmful mold to grow in buildings and homes and can cause serious health problems and even death.

Some symptoms of mold exposure are:

  • Sinus congestion and runny nose
  • Wheezing and difficult breathing
  • Sore throat
  • Coughing
  • Frequent sneezing
  • Eye irritation

Should My Home Be Tested for Mold?

Florida is a warm and moist area, which can be the perfect environment for mold growth.  If you can visually observe mold in your home, remediation is imperative to prevent the mold from spreading to other areas of your home.  If you cannot observe the mold, but are experiencing symptoms of mold or sense elevated moisture level, call American Home Detectives to determine if your home is in fact a safe environment for normal respiration.
